Young Musicians (YM) - Infants

Young Musicians – Infants + parent or caregiver

In this wonderful class, our youngest music makers will discover steady beat through fun lap games, floor games and even folk dancing with a parent or caregiver. Infants will participate by responding to songs with intuitive and gross motor skill instruments including bells, shakers, the welcoming drum, and colorful scarves. Parents will learn how to encourage their infant in music play and singing, while increasing their personal repertoire of children’s folk music. This class has a rolling admission.  You can register any time after the class begins.

Young Musicians - Age 1

In this joyful class, toddlers practice music concepts, including high and low, loud and soft, fast and slow, and steady beat by jumping, tiptoeing, walking, running, and even rolling on the floor.  These young musicians will explore simple rhythms using beautiful instruments including drums, triangles, bells, and shakers.  They will also develop in tune singing, and engage in active listening to classic music selections.  This class has a rolling admission.  You can register at anytime after the class begins.

Through fun movement and imagination games three-year-old musicians will continue to learn basic music concepts, in tune singing, and solo singing.  With the introduction of the Glockenspiel in this year, children will play simple melodies, add new rhythmic accents to familiar songs, explore pitch relationship (higher and lower), and become aware of the musical alphabet. Li'l Singers
Open to ages 4 to 6 years.  Designed to assist very young singers in developing healthy and beautiful voices.  Enjoyable children's songs are used to provide a positive experience in learning to sing.  Fun musical games provide an introduction to simple rhythmic reading, beginning ear training, and basic solfege.  The curriculum rotates each semester, so this class may be taken multiple times.

Advanced Li'l Singers
Open to ages 4 to 6 years, who have completed 3 semesters of Li'l Singers, Young Musicians 5, or have basic understanding of pentatonic solfege.  In this play based class, little singers gain additional experience as ensemble singers, and begin to try out solo singing.  These singers participate in NFMC's Junior Music Festival, and are often invited to sing as part of a children's chorus in professional settings.  We continue to enjoy lots of silly music games, and sing fun songs, while learning to be better singers and musicians.

Open to ages 7 to 9 years.  In level I, young singers will develop healthy and beautiful singing voices.  This class will introduce young singers to ear training, sight singing andd performance skills through games and fun songs.  This class will culminate in an informal performance for friends and family.  The curriculum changes focus each semester, so this class can be taken up to 4 times.

Advanced Singers I
Open to ages 7 to 10 years, who have completed 3 semesters of Singers I,  4 of Li'l Singers, or are fluent with pentatonic solfege.  In this fun class, students gain additional experience as solo and ensemble singers.  These singers participate in NFMC's Junior Music Festival, and are often invited to sing in professional settings.  In recent years, this class has been asked to sing at Disney Hall, Repertory Opera Company, Opera Pasadena, and the California Philarmonic.  We also sing lots of silly songs, and play fun games, while continuing to develop our musical skills.

Open to ages 10 to 14 years.  These vocal students will develop healthy and beautiful singing voices.  This fun and supportive class will consist of solo and ensemble music.  Singers will learn confidence building performance techniques, while studying sight singing, and general musicianship.  The last day of class will be an informal performance for family and friends.  The curriculum changes focus each semester, so this class can be taken up 4 times.

High School Voice
This fun, supportive and challenging class will help high school singers develop healthy, confident and beautiful voices.  Through proven techniques, students will grow as performers, musicians, and soloists.  The high school students will sing their solos in an informal performance for family & friends at the end of the Fall session.

In this ensemble class, you will learn how to really use yor singing voice!  This chorus is for 3rd and 4th graders who LOVE to sing fun and beautiful songs with a large group of singers.  Bring a friend who loves to sing as much as you do!  Mrs. Minano will teach you several fun songs, and you will have a blast actually performing those songs!  Learn the 3 "P"s of singing, meet Shamu and Mr. Pooch, and get ready for lots of fun!  The class will conclude with a performance (location TBA).

Guitar for Adults 55+

ROCK GUITAR

Ages 12 and up. Designed for beginner and intermediate players, this class focuses on techniques used to play rock guitar spanning classical rock from the 1950s and 60s to contemporary rock. No music reading skills are necessary.

Keyboard Theory/Ensemble Workshops
Open to students who are currently taking Suzuki or traditional piano lessons.  Suzuki students are strongly encouraged to enroll, but are not required to do so.  Private lessons are coordinated with the workshop instructor.  Seven meetings are held in the Keyboard Lab where the elements of music and reading skills are practiced through games and activities.  Students learn to play together following a steady beat.  Workshops meet national standards for music education in theory, music appreciation, history and composition.  Three Performance Workshops are held in the Recital Hall.

String Performance Workshops
Students may register for the 3 Performance Workshops separately if they are unable to participate in the regular group class sessions.  Students of all advancement are welcome to perform a solo or ensemble in fromt of an appreciative audience.  This class is wonderful for those students who need a 'trial run' before playing in a more formal recital.  Students learn stage etiquette (as well as audience etiquette).

Ages 13 and up.  Whether you have played jazz before or not, this ensemble is open to all instruments.  All you need is an interest in jazz and Latin music and have basic music reading skills.

Percussion - Introduction to Latin Percussion
Open to ages 12 to Adult.  This is a fun three-part class.  Part 1 (Fall) focuses on the concept of clave and congos.  Part 2 (Winter) adds timbales and Part 3 (Spring) brings it all together by adding the bongos, bells, and woodblocks.  This 3-part series completes the Afro-Latin percussion rhythm section.  All levels of percussionist are welcome - no experience necessary.  Final performance at end of Spring.

Percussion - How to Play the Drum-Set
Open to ages 10 to Adult.  Learn the ins and outs of the Drum-set.  How to hold the sticks, how to set up, break down and tune a drum-set, how to use the drum pad and play your favoirte music.  We will cover blues, rock and jazz fundamentals.  In the Fall the focus is beginning reading and listening.  Winter & Spring will cover intermediate/advanced reading and listening.  Learn how to purchase & maintain your own drum-set.
